Intercultural Psychology

Living for such a long period of time in a foreign land, living a loving relationship with a person whose nationality is diverse from yours, restarting professional as well as personal life abroad, being urged to learn a new language and to get used to habits and costumes from another culture, the strange feeling of inability to communicate accurately as one could wish or even the awkwardly feeling of also being misunderstood (even when you can speak the local language) the confrontation with "the other", the confrontation with yourself in a completely different environment and the local culture itself using a new point of view, this all together brings new perspectives and opens new opportunities, but can get someone overloaded, bring about stress, anxiety, conflicts, psychiatric and psychosomatics illnesses.

Even though there are a large number of foreigners living now in Germany, there is not as much therapeutic helping hand specialized to benefit immigrants, as someone can find in his homeland. This is mainly due to the fact that the professionals in this field generally do not have knowledge (or very limited information) about the present and the previous life style of the immigrant, or simply they do not take into consideration such important aspects during his/her therapeutic process. There is also the possibility that the barrier which blocks the improvement in the therapeutic process of immigrants, couples/binationalities families and expatriates is the language (although it is mastered by the person) or the intercultural misunderstandings.
In my opinion, it is very important, when dealing with a foreign client/patient, that the intercultural perspective be one of the main guidance during the therapeutic development. I am aware of this on account of my international experience, and my own personal and Professional experience with people from more than 20 different countries, also my experience as an immigrant previously in Ireland, presently in Germany, and as important as everything quoted above on the recent theories which have been academically developed in this Field. Concepts such as cultural dimension and contact with the "other" may not at all be underestimate in this context (not even overestimate, for sure).
My job as a therapist aims especially at Latin origin immigrants, at African immigrants whose mother tongue is also Portuguese and their families as well, besides European professionals in general who daily find themselves facing intercultural situations in their work relating to Latin people. The therapeutic process can be conducted in Portuguese, Spanish, German and English.
